종교가 친환경행동의사에 미치는 영향

Abstract

The objective of this study is to empirically examine the effects of religions, such as Buddhism, on pro-environment behavioral intention (PBI), focussing on the Lynn White Thesis. This method consists of four models of multiple regression with different respective sets of independent variables. The data used is from the 5th WVS Korean sample (N=1,174). The results may be summarized as follows; first, without religious sincerity factor (RSF) as a control variable, Protestantism along with Buddhism appear to have a very significant positive effect on PBI contrary to the White Thesis, while Catholicism reveals no meaningful relation with PBI. Second, with RSF as a control variable, Protestantism does not turn out to be significant any longer, with RSF appearing significant, while Buddhism remains significant. This indicates that in the case of Protestantism, RSF has a relatively stronger influence on PBI than the religion itself, and in case of buddhism, the religion itself directly affects PBI.

본 연구의 목적은 White가설에 따라 불교를 포함한 종교의 차이가 친환경행동의사에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 규명하는 것이다. 연구의 방법은 독립변수 조합을 달리하는 네 가지의 중회귀모형이며, 모든 모형에서 종속변수는 친환경행동의사 요인이다. 자료는 제5차 WVS 한국 표본을 활용했다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 사실들을 간략히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 우선 종교 신실성 요인을 통제하지 않을 경우, White의 주장과는 반대로 개신교는 친환경행동의사에 매우 유의한 정(正)의 영향력을 보이며 불교 또한 그렇다. 그러나 천주교는 유의하지 않다. 한편 종교 신실성 요인을 통제할 경우, 이 요인이 유의한 대신 개신교는 더 이상 유의하지 않았다. 다만 불교 더미는 여전히 유의했다. 이런 사실은 개신교의 경우는 종파 그 자체보다는 종교 신실성이 친환경행동의사에 더 큰 영향을 주지만 불교의 경우는 종교 그 자체가 직접적인 영향을 미치기 때문인 것으로 보인다.
