Abstract
Trees absorb and purify the air pollutants through their metabolism such as photosynthesis, emitting some beneficial substances for human body through their pores. They not only influence on the urban micro meteorology into cooling down and dispersion of air pollutants but protect the Earth from the various erosions as well. Also the green color of the trees provides people with aesthetical effects and psychological tranquility. As you can see, trees do a lot of good for humankind. This first year study was to find out the relation between urban treed area and the atmosphere environment out of the various functions of trees, specifically, to explore 「the gas-phase air pollutants(SOx and NOx) decreasing function of trees in urban area」. In other words, this study choses the urban area as its site, for the urban area had been a major concern of air pollution matter, and the focused air pollutants were sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, both of which were gas-phase pollutants. Further studies, based on this year’s one, may be carried out for more extensive areas and for more diversified air pollutants like ozone, etc. There are many studies on the general air purifying function of trees. The studies on impacts of trees on air quality in urban areas considering the air purifying function of trees and wind flow, however, has rarely been reported. That is because they assume the atmosphere improvement by trees’s function of absorbing pollutants might be small in smaller treed area, and also because there is no fully established modeling method to analyse a relatively small-scale phenomenon of the urban environment. This study classified the urban treed area into neighborhood parks treed area and street canyon trees. It also developed a quantitative analysis method for evaluation of the atmosphere influence related to the gas phase air pollutants(sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides) in these two areas. The neighborhood park is a typical urban park, thus it is assumed that it is necessary to find out how much that size of treed area could influence the atmosphere environment in actual settings. A street canyon is an area, formed in a street between two rows of tall buildings. It is a geographically handicapped area with a great potential of danger in local atmospheric pollution, so its atmosphere environment is a lot more important issue. Through the above mentioned modeling method, evaluation system of air quality influence in treed area had been adopted in a number of cases to analyse the air pollution decreasing function of trees with regard to the types of urban treed area. From this, the best settings for encouraging the atmosphere improving function of urban treed area were searched. The result would be used as a basis for the planning of treed area to improve the urban air quality.
