Abstract

Green Growth and Sustainable Development: Assessing the Sustainability of Korea's Green Growth Strategies "Low Carbon, Green Growth", Korea's new national vision, emphasizes the implementation of policies that promote environmentally sustainable economic development and foster low carbon, socially inclusive development at the same time. The policy measures and action plan were prepared to develop competitive green industries that can contribute to addressing climate change and other environmental challenges. A new policy package has also been proposed that includes investments in environment related infrastructure as well as research and development on clean technologies and various measures to promotes sustainable consumption at the local and household level. Since this new strategy encompasses almost all domestic environmental policy questions as well as Korea's most pressing economic issues, its impact will extend far beyond industry. Green growth has potential to exert enormous effects on environmental quality, natural resources, and social development. Accordingly, in this study we propose several assessment strategies which can be used to evaluate implementation, performance, and sustainability of national green growth strategies.
