Abstract
Studies on the relationships between the built environment and physical conditions have tended to center upon BMI, and few have examined relationships which go beyond this indicator; such as those with perceived health conditions, physical fitness, and disease/accident prevention. This study, however, uses public GIS data and the Seoul sample of the 2013 Survey on Citizens Sports Participation, to analyze what effects population density, land use balance, street intersection density, and public transit density have on BMI and how these differ from their effects on other perceived physical condition indicators. A regression model found that BMI is not affected by any of the built environment variables initially considered, but further analysis showed that residence in the Gangnam region has a significant effect. Regarding the subjective indicators, the improved walkability reflected in transit density and land use balance had a positive impact on health and physical fitness. At the same time, street intersection density correlated with increased disease/accident occurrence, implying that urban centers are a negative environment with regards to transportation safety and air pollution-related public health. Key Words: Body Mass Index, Health, Physical Fitness, Accident-Disease Prevention, Built environment
