화석연료 사용량을 고려한 탄소배출량과 도시화율의 관계에 관한 연구

Abstract

기후변화에 대한 관심이 고조되며 개발된 이산화탄소 배출 영향 요인을 설명하기 위한 대표적인 모형의 하나인 STIRPAT 모형은 인구, 경제활동, 기술로 이산화탄소 배출을 설명한다. 최근에는 여기에 도시화율을 추가로 고려한 연구들이 이루어져왔는데, 도시화율의 설명 경로는 정·부의 효과가 혼재되어 있다. 이에 본 연구는 설명변수로서의 도시화율의 적절성을 점검하고, 도시화율을 대체할 수 있는 변수로 발전에 사용되는 화석연료 비중을 제시하였다. 패널 고정효과 모형 추정 결과 도시화율과 화석연료 소비량을 동시에 넣은 모형과 한 가지만 넣은 모형에서의 계수값이 큰 차이를 보이지 않아 도시화율, 화석연료 소비량 모두 이산화탄소 배출량을 설명하기에 적합한 설명변수로 분석되었다. 경제 성장에 있어서 두 변수의 효과를 분석하기 위해 소득을 기준으로 국가 그룹을 분류하고 고정 효과 모형을 추정한 결과, 도시화율의 경우 고소득국에서, 화석연료 비율의 경우 고중소득국에서 탄력성이 높게 나타나 소득수준에 따른 두 변수의 역할은 다소 다르게 나타났다. The STIRPAT model is a representative model which uses population, affluence, and technology effect as variables to explain carbon emissions. Recently, urbanization has begun to be considered in the STIRPAT model, but the direction of the effect on carbon emissions is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, estimation using a panel fixed-effect model was conducted to validate urbanization and propose the share of fossil fuel in the power generation sector as a possible explanatory variable for carbon emissions. The results showed that both urbanization and fossil fuel usage were appropriate since the changes among models were negligible. Furthermore, countries were classified by income level to investigate the role of those two variables by group. The empirical results indicated that urbanization and fossil fuel usage have the highest elasticity in the high income group and upper middle income group.
