Abstract
Evaluation of Air Quality of Nonsmoking Rooms in Hospitality Venues using Measurements of PM2.5 Concentrations In South Korea, hospitality venues, including PC game rooms, that allow adolescents to enter, must designate a nonsmoking area pursuant Article 7 of the Enforcement Rules of the National Health Promotion Act. Under these rules, a smoking area, constituting up to half of the entire space of the venue, must be enclosed on all sides by solid, impermeable walls. However, a large number of Korean public health experts have reported that secondhand smoke(SHS) levels in nonsmoking areas in those venues are still significantly high. Using measurements of PM2.5(particulate matters of less than 2.5 micrometers) and airborne nicotine concentrations as well as separation rates between smoking and nonsmoking areas, this study was able to examine whether separation of nonsmoking area as currently practiced is a viable way to protect nonsmoking adolescents from secondhand smoke exposure. The separation rate(%) was determined by subtracting the surface area of openings in partitions from the entire surface area of partitions. The measurements were conducted at 28 PC game rooms randomly selected from 14 districts of Seoul metropolitan city, South Korea. We calculated the ratios of PM2.5 and airborne nicotine concentrations measured in nonsmoking areas to those in smoking areas. According to the Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, it turned out that the distributions of the ratios of PM2.5 and nicotine concentrations between the two separation groups ( ≥ 78% vs < 78%) were not different; p=0.31 for PM2.5 and p=0.43 for airborne nicotine. Our study thus provides compelling evidence for the support of more rigorous policy initiatives aimed at encouraging complete smoking ban and reducing SHS in such venues.
