기업을 비롯한 사회 주요 행위자들의 의사결정에 환경, 사회, 거버넌스에 걸친 종합적인 가치가 반영되도록 하는 ESG(Environmental, Social, and Governance)는 최근 급격히 주목받으며 중요성이 커지고 있다. 최근에는 기후위기, 생물다양성위기 등이 대두되며 환경에 대한 인식이 더욱 고조되고 세계적으로도 글로벌 금융기관의 변화, EU의 탄소국경조정제도(CBAM), ‘기업 지속가능성 실사지침(Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence)’ 등 관련 글로벌 규범도 강화되는 추세에서 ESG의 중요성은 급격히 높아지고 있다. 또한 ESG는 환경, 사회, 산업, 경영·경제 등 전통적 영역을 넘어 법, 행정, 도시, 기술, 교육, 예술 등 다양한 분야와 융합되고 있으며, 기업의 경영전략뿐 아니라 법·행정체계, 정부 및 공공조직의 운영, 민간영역 등에 폭넓게 반영되면서 특정 부문에서만 통용되는 개념이 아니라 지속가능사회로 나아가는 시대 정신으로 인식되고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 경제·인문사회연구회와 한국환경연구원은 한국ESG학회와 협력하여 ‘2023 세계ESG포럼’을 운영함으로써 ESG에 관련된 다학제간 학술교류를 도모하고 한국 ESG 체제의 발전 방향을 모색하였다. 또한 경제·인문사회연구회와 한국환경연구원이 공동기획한 “공공정책·제도와 ESG” 세션을 통해 국가 지속가능발전 정책과 ESG 성과의 연계성 강화 등을 주제로 국가정책과 공공부문에서의 ESG의 의미와 발전방향을 논의하고, 나아가 ESG의 발전과 협력을 위한 과제를 모색하였다. 포럼에서는 한국 ESG의 현황을 진단하고 방향을 논의하는 한편 삼성, SK, 현대, 유한킴벌리 등 주요 기업들의 우수사례를 공유하고, ESG 평가, 교육, 공공정책·제도 등 ESG와 관련된 다양한 부문에서 발표와 토론이 이루어졌다. 국외 학자들과 함께 미국, 호주, 유럽 등 주요 외국들의 ESG 현황과 사례도 공유하였다. 포럼에는 국내외 200여 명의 ESG 전문가들이 참여하였고 조선일보, 중앙일보, JTBC 등 주요 언론에도 보도되었다.

The ESG framework, which seeks to reflect environmental, social, and governance values in the decision-making of major players in society such as private firms, has rapidly gained attention and importance in recent times. Moreover, climate crisis and biodiversity challenges are further intensifying environmental awareness. ESG-related global norms have been reinforced through changes in global financial institutions, the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, among other such initiatives. Accordingly, the importance of the ESG framework is currently growing sharply. The ESG framework is being incorporated in many different sectors such as law, administration, city planning, technology, education, and art, beyond the traditional sectors of environment, society, industry, business and economy. It is also widely reflected in legal and administrative systems, government and public organization operations, and the private sector as well as business management strategies. Hence, the ESG framework is regarded as a universal spirit of today’s world toward a sustainable society, rather than a concept for limited sectors. In this context, the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences (NRC) and the Korea Environment Institute (KEI) hosted the “2023 World ESG Forum” in collaboration with the Korean ESG Association. The aims of the Forum were to promote interdisciplinary academic exchanges on the ESG framework and explore directions for its development in Korea. In the session titled “Public Policies and Institutions and ESG” co-organized by NRC and KEI, participants discussed the meaning and future directions of the ESG framework in national policies and the public sector upon the theme of integration of ESG performance with national sustainable development policies. The participants further explored challenges for future progress and collaboration involving the ESG framework. The forum proceeded with diagnostic discussions on the current status of the ESG framework in Korea and deliberated on the directions going forward. Participants also shared best practices from major companies, such as Samsung, SK, Hyundai, and Yuhan Kimberly. Presentations and discussions across various sectors related to the ESG framework followed, including ESG assessment, education, and public policies and institutions. International academics from other major countries, such as the US, Australia, and Europe, also shared their ESG status and cases. The forum was attended by more than 200 ESG experts from Korea and around the world, and reported by major media outlets, including Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, and JTBC.
